Customer question:
What are the signs of anemia? Anonymous customer's question
Pharmacist's answer:
If you have anemia, you may experience several symptoms, including:
- pale complexion
- fatigue or weakness
- cold hands and feet
- quick beats or heart palpitations
- dizziness, fainting, or headache
- difficulty breathing, even when doing things you could generally do easily
Anemia is a too-low number of red blood cells per volume unit of blood. Anemia is reported as a low hemoglobin concentration in a routine blood test. Hemoglobin is the main protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. If you suffer from anemia, your hemoglobin level will also be low. If it is low enough, your tissues or organs may not receive enough oxygen.
If iron deficiency anemia is not treated, you may become more susceptible to diseases and infections due to iron deficiency affecting the body's natural defense system (immune system).
Severe anemia can increase the risk of complications from iron deficiency, affecting the heart or lungs. It can result in an abnormally fast heartbeat (tachycardia) or heart failure, where your heart can't pump enough blood around the body.
Pregnant women with severe or untreated anemia also have a higher risk of complications before and after delivery.
