Customer question:
How can I help myself with a sore throat? Question from an anonymous customer
Pharmacist's answer:
Hot and cold liquids
Warm liquids can reduce oral discomfort by soothing the back of the throat. Try alternating between hot and cold to find what works best for you. For example, drink hot beverages such as tea or soup, or try cold liquids such as iced water or smoothies.
Gagging warm water
Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle (but do not swallow) the mixture every three hours. Saltwater can help reduce discomfort and irritation in the throat by drawing water away from the problem area of the throat.
Antihistamines and over-the-counter pain relievers
An antihistamine can ease or relieve throat discomfort. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, and naproxen are active ingredients that help with pain located a little deeper in the glands and other parts of the neck.
Steam and moisture
Steam loosens mucus and can moisturize and soothe a sore throat. Treat yourself to a hot shower or enjoy a humid room - place a humidifier here. You can also create steam using a diffuser and add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to the water.
Rest
Sleep and rest give your body time to regenerate, which is especially important when you're sick. In addition, specific immune processes during sleep can boost your body's ability to fight disease.
