Customer question:
What can cause bone pain? Anonymous customer's question
Pharmacist's answer:
Some causes of bone pain are easier to spot and justify than others. If you break a bone after a trauma, such as a car accident or a fall, you'll know exactly why your bone hurts. But most causes of bone pain are not so obvious, such as some types of cancer that start in (or spread to) the bones and cause bone pain. Traumas and injuries very often cause bone pain.
The most common causes of bone pain include:
- traumas and other injuries
- medical conditions that weaken your bones
- benign bone tumors
- some types of cancer
Medical conditions that cause bone pain:
- osteoporosis
- osteoarthritis
- avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis)
- osteomyelitis
- osteomalacia and other types of vitamin D deficiency
- Paget disease of bone (osteitis deformans)
- osteopenia
- rickets
Benign (non-cancerous) bone tumors that cause bone pain:
- aneurysmal bone cysts
- osteoblastomas
- exostoses
- osteochondromas
Types of cancer that cause bone pain:
- bone cancer
- osteosarcoma
- leukemia
- metastatic cancer (cancer that spreads to the bones)
See a doctor as soon as you feel pain in your bones. It is important to find out the cause of the pain as soon as possible. Regardless of what's causing it, don't ignore new bone pain, especially if it gets worse or doesn't go away within a few days.
