Boswellia (Boswellia serrata) is a slightly less well-known medicinal plant to Slovenes. However, it is highly valued in India, where it has been used for centuries as an Indian incense for religious purposes. It is especially famous as an important medicinal plant in Ayurvedic medicine, which is primarily recommended as an anti-inflammatory agent. Boswellia is also known among Christians, as the Bible mentions it as one of the precious gifts given by the three holy kings at the birth of Jesus.
Boswellia is the oldest known agricultural plant in India with a long tradition of use in the Indian diet. It grows as a shrub or small tree, which can be found in dry areas of India, North America and the Middle East. From its bark they obtain a fragrant resin from which they make incense, and for therapeutic purposes they prepare an extract containing boswellic acid and its derivatives. The most effective is acetyl-11-keto-etabosvelic acid (AKBA).
BOSVELIA IS AN ADAPTOGEN
It is also valued as an adaptogenic plant. Adaptogens are substances that enable the body to cope better and easier with stressful situations. Boswellia's immune system is adaptogenic by balancing the secretion of corticosteroids and thus reduces the body's excessive response to environmental stressors.
ANTI - INFLAMMATORY ACTION OF BOSVELIA ABSTRACT
With its anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, boswellic acid AKBA relieves problems with arthritis, asthma, Crohn's disease, back pain and many others.
Today, its extract is used mainly because of its anti-inflammatory effects, as boswellia inhibits the action of inflammatory mediators by acting on the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase and thus reduces the formation of leukotrienes. Indirectly, however, it inhibits the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 beta. IL-6, TNF-alpha, IL-12 and IL-23. In this way, it can help reduce inflammation in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ulcerative colitis, asthma and the like. The main advantage of boswellia is that due to its different action it does not accelerate the breakdown of glycosaminoglycans and does not irritate the stomach, and at the same time it is effective in various types of inflammation.
Research published in the scientific journal Phytomedicine in 2017 suggests that the use of boswellia extracts in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can help reduce pain caused by joint inflammation, increase joint mobility and elasticity, and alleviate movement problems.
The effect is visible within 40 days, but it is recommended to take the extract for 9 days with at least 50% content of AKBA boswellic acid.
They also published a study in the same scientific journal that pain in rheumatoid arthritis decreases and mobility increases in about 55% of patients after two months of use.
In addition, boswellia extract also increases the production of fluid inside the joints, which acts as a lubricant and thus facilitates the movement and circulation of the joints.
The positive effects of boswellia were also observed in asthmatics, especially in the lower secretion of mucus. Due to its anti-inflammatory effect, bronchospasm was also less pronounced. With its lipoxygenase inhibitory effect, boswellia extracts also have a beneficial effect on Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Use and dosage
The dosage should be around 400 mg of an extract with at least 50% boswellic acid, and there are usually preparations on the market standardized to 60% of the total boswellic acids, most of which are AKBA.
Although the use of boswellia extracts in Europe is still in its infancy and there are not enough clinical studies to register a standardized boswellia preparation as an herbal medicine, users recommend it as a good adaptogen and as an excellent preparation with broad anti-inflammatory action. This is supported by several good original scientific studies, so the preparations are recommended to help overcome stress and as a supplement to these diseases, along with dietary supplements based on glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid.
