Customer question:
How many chia seeds can we eat per day? Anonymous customer's question
Pharmacist's answer:
There is no recommended daily intake of chia seeds. Nevertheless, they can be safely consumed in 50 grams per day, about five tablespoons. Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc. They also contain all nine essential amino acids.
Essential amino acids are those that your body cannot produce, so you must get them through your diet.
Two tablespoons of chia seeds contain:
- protein: 4 grams
- fiber: 11 grams
- unsaturated fat: 7 grams
- calcium: 18 percent of the recommended daily intake (RDA)
- trace amounts of zinc
- trace copper
Too many chia seeds can cause side effects such as digestive problems, allergic reactions, or weight gain. In moderation, however, chia seeds can be a nutritious addition to a balanced diet. Remember to drink plenty of water to prevent digestive problems or other side effects.
In particular, due to the high soluble fiber content, chia seeds can absorb water up to 15-20 times greater than their weight. As chia seeds pass through the digestive system, they absorb water like a sponge in the intestinal tract and expand. This is what can lead to potential bloating.
Avoid consuming chia seeds if you take anticoagulants and antiplatelets (these prevent blood clots), antihypertensives (these treat high blood pressure), or cancer medications.
