Vaginal fungal infection and bacterial vaginosis occur due to a disrupted natural balance between bacteria and fungi in the vagina.
Bacteria create a naturally acidic vaginal pH in which fungi and bacteria cannot overgrow. Various factors such as e.g. Diabetes, pregnancy, a diet rich in carbohydrates, taking antibiotics, a drop in immune resistance, a week before menstruation and the use of aggressive intimate soaps can lead to disruption of the natural balance in the vagina and then there are fungi, most commonly Candida albicans and anaerobes bacteria can overgrow. This leads to itching, discharge, redness of the external genitalia, pain and burning sensation during intercourse and urination.
Important: Bacteria create the naturally acidic pH of the vagina
When there is an overgrowth of fungi and, among other signs, a white discharge without a pronounced odor appears, we speak of a vaginal fungal infection. Treatment is most often done using topical antifungals and adding lactic acid bacteria to the vagina or consuming them with food and supplements.
In the case of the growth of bacteria in the vagina, among other signs, there is a discharge with a very unpleasant smell of fish. In this case, however, we are talking about bacterial vaginosis, which is treated with antibiotics and similar additional measures when in fungal inflammation.
As a prevention against vaginal infections, the use of special intimate soaps, which often contain different concentrations of lactic acid and glycerol, is also advised. They regulate the pH of the external genitalia, moisturize its mucous membrane and thus reduce the feeling of itching. The use of dedicated intimate soaps is most often recommended by gynecologists for a short time, up to 14 days. For daily intimate care, they recommend washing the genitals with plain water.
