People swallow saliva an average of five times a minute, so we can become aware of sore throats fairly quickly. This can be short-lived and last only a few days or it can last for several weeks or. months.

Sore throat is most common in winter; feels at the first signs of a cold, virus infection, due to dry air or even seasonal Sore throat is most common in winter; it is felt at the first signs of a cold, a virus infection, dry air or even seasonal allergies. Drinking tea with honey, consuming large amounts of vitamin C and inhaling essential oils helps with initial, mild pain. If the sore throat is due to a bacterial infection, we are talking about bacterial inflammation or streptococcal angina. In this case, taking antibiotics is also necessary.

Between streptococcal infection and sore throat due to e.g. a cold can be differentiated by the patient himself and does not require medical attention. With a cold, a cough and runny nose usually occur along with a sore throat. In bacterial inflammation, in addition to sore throat, there is also fever, usually above 38 · c, tremors, headache, feeling of being forced to vomit and pain in the joints and muscles. The lymph nodes swell and swallowing is very difficult, so loss of appetite and weakness are also common. We talk about scarlet fever when, in addition to the symptoms of streptococcal angina, a rash appears on the neck and chest, which gradually spreads. It is a childhood disease that usually gets over once.

Self-medication is appropriate for a sore throat, while for purulent angina it is necessary to seek medical help. Oral antiseptics, which can be combined with local anesthetics, reduce inflammation and the feeling of sore throat. If the pain is accompanied by a dry and irritating cough, it is recommended to eat lozenges containing Iceland moss or panthenol. Propolis preparations have an antiseptic effect and disinfect the oral mucosa

Slovenian pharmacists most often recommend the new medicine Septabene, which is available in the form of a spray and lozenges, to relieve sore throat. It contains benzidamine and cetylpyridine. Benzidamine is a molecule with a non-steroidal chemical structure with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The mechanism of action is based on inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and thus reduction of local signs of inflammation. Cetylpyridine is a cationic antiseptic from the group of quaternary ammonium salts that binds to the surface of a bacterial cell, diffuses through it, and binds to the cytoplasmic membrane of microbes. Due to binding, the cytoplasmic membrane becomes transient for low molecular weight components, especially potassium ions. Cetylpyridine then penetrates the cell and causes permanent disruption of cellular functions and thus cell death. In second place in the frequency of counseling is the drug Tantum Verde, which contains benzidamine.

In third place, Slovenian pharmacists ranked Septolete or. NeoSeptolete. Septolete contain benzalkonium chloride, an antiseptic from the group of quaternary ammonium compounds. It acts as a cationic detergent. Due to its emulsifying properties, it depolarizes the cytoplasmic membranes of microbes and thus increases their permeability. In this way, it has a bactericidal effect on Gram + and Gram-bacteria and on Candida albicans. NeoSeptolete and Septolete plus contain cetylpyridine.
