Cetylpyridine is a cationic antiseptic from the group of quaternary ammonium salts that binds to the surface of a bacterial cell, diffuses through it, and binds to the cytoplasmic membrane of microbes. Due to binding, the cytoplasmic membrane becomes transient for low molecular weight components, especially potassium ions. Cetylpyridine then penetrates the cell and causes permanent disruption of cellular functions and thus cell death.
