Customer Questions:
What are the signs or symptoms of varicose veins? How can I help myself?
Pharmacist's response:
Varicose veins are swollen and dilated blue or dark purple veins that usually appear in the leg areas. They can also be lumpy, bulging, or twisted. Varicose veins develop over time, and the leading cause of their formation is that the small valves in the veins stop working correctly.
In a healthy vein, blood flows smoothly back to the heart. Backflow of blood is prevented by a series of tiny valves that open and close to let blood through. However, suppose the valves weaken or are damaged. In that case, the blood flows backward and collects in the vein, which eventually causes them to become visibly swollen and enlarged (we are talking about varicose veins).
Symptoms are as follows
- painful, heavy, and uncomfortable legs
- swollen feet and ankles
- muscle cramps in the legs
- dry skin and changes in the color of the lower part of the leg
