Customer question:
Can the active ingredient naproxen (for example, Nalgesin) help relieve sciatica pain? Question from an anonymous customer
Pharmacist's answer:
The active ingredient naproxen (English: naproxen) is available in many medicines that are also available in Slovenia. Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intended primarily for pain relief but also for the relief of inflammation and related problems. Naproxen works by blocking the enzyme that produces prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins play an essential role in the inflammation itself, and the body produces them mainly at the site of damaged tissue and causes redness, heat, swelling, and pain.
Naproxen, as an active ingredient, is used for the following types of pain:
- rheumatoid arthritis
- osteoarthritis
- ankylosing spondylitis
- juvenile arthritis
- tendonitis
- bursitis
- gout attacks
- muscle pains
- stretches and sprains
- headaches
- toothache
- menstrual cramps
- fever
Sciatica is usually short-lived but sometimes lasts for years, primarily if the cause is not addressed. For example, simple everyday activities such as bending over, sneezing, or defecating can trigger intense pain. In addition, when the sciatic nerve is irritated or damaged, the pain may persist even when you are at rest or lying down.
Because many reasons can cause sciatica and the nerve can be permanently damaged without immediate treatment, you must see a doctor at the first sign of symptoms. Unfortunately, surgery is sometimes required, but sciatica can usually be managed with a combination of medication and home care.
When you first feel sciatic pain, take the medication with naproxen or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Then, take medicine according to the doctor's instructions. Naproxen is a commonly used anti-inflammatory drug that is less likely to cause concomitant stomach problems.
