The roots of Namman Muay Oil can be found in traditional Thai herbal medicine, where the exact recipe has been used for years a few select Muay Thai gyms and was passed down purely by word of mouth in fighting circles. It wasn't until 1963 and the reign of Pon Kingpetch, Thailand's first Western-style boxing champion, that the miracle product became a massively popular brand with a global reach.
Kingpetch trained at a gym owned by trainer Thongthos Intratat. Herbalist and alternative medicine practitioner Intratat was always looking for new ways to use traditional Thai home remedies to help his team of fighters warm up and repair sore muscles and joints after training and (too) frequent fights.
Intratat discovered that a fighter massaged with homemade Namman Muay oil was less prone to injury. Intratat founded Devakam Apothecary Hall, his own pharmaceutical company, and began producing the first Namman Muay products, now used by millions of people around the world. In honor of Pone Kingpetch, Thontos Intratat and their historical achievements, a statue was erected in Hua Hin in the south of Thailand.
Which active ingredients does Namman Muay Thai oil contain?
Methyl salicylate
Methyl salicylate is traditionally obtained from the leaves of the evergreen plant. The production process involves the fermentation of natural material from the plant. This is followed by distillation to obtain a purer product. The final product consists almost entirely of methyl salicylate, the active ingredient in wintergreen oil.
The oil of wintergreen mainly contains the active ingredient methyl salicylate, which accounts for approximately 85 to 99 percent of this essential oil. Products containing oil of wintergreen are often used as a topical pain reliever.
Eugenol
It is commonly found naturally in clove essential oil, which is high in antioxidants and has strong anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it effective for many common conditions.
Menthol
Peppermint oil can be used aromatically, topically and internally to address a variety of issues, from muscle fatigue and joint stiffness to seasonal allergies, to low energy and digestive issues.
Menthol and methyl salicylate are known anti-irritants. They work by cooling and then warming the skin. These sensations on the skin distract you from feeling pain deeper in your muscles, joints and tendons.
