Most couples get a baby soon. For some, however, conceiving is not so easy and the number of couples facing infertility is increasing. Infertility is a serious problem in modern society, as every sixth or seventh couple in Europe is infertile, and according to the World Health Organization, every fourth couple in the world is infertile. “More than a number, it’s important for everyone to know a couple in their neighborhood who is infertile. This tells us that this incidence is really high and that it is a serious public health problem, "emphasizes the interlocutor prof. dr. Eda Vrtačnik Bokal, Ph.D. med., head of the Clinical Department of Reproduction of the Gynecology Clinic of the University Medical Center Ljubljana.

Infertility treatment procedures
The best known procedures are in vitro fertilization (sperm cells are introduced into the uterus) and in vitro fertilization (ZTO; eggs and sperm cells are fertilized outside the body, and the embryo is then transferred to the uterus). The ZTO also includes direct insemination by inserting a sperm into an ovum (ICSI) and fertilization with a selected sperm (IMSI).
STORAGE OF GENETIC MATERIAL IN ONCOLOGICAL HOSPITALS
The Clinical Department of Reproduction has greatly increased the possibility of storing the genetic material of women with cancer before chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as they know that chemotherapy and radiotherapy mostly cause ovarian damage and reduced ovarian reserve or complete failure. In this area, the clinic works very well with the Oncology Institute, which refers women to chemotherapy. The clinic is very successful in this, as, for example, even highly developed countries capture only a few percent of women with cancer who are included in the storage program, and in our country this percentage is probably over half.

Slovenia is one of the few countries that implements IMSI procedures
How long does the procedure take from admission to a successful conception?
In Slovenia, just over 4% of children are born according to ZTO procedures, which places you at the very top of Europe. What is the reason for such good results?
Accessibility is one of the key reasons for good results, but it is also important that all three centers address infertility fully and responsibly.
Do you look at its characteristics when choosing a donor?
A woman can store gametes while she is still young and use them later. What do you think about a woman choosing a child after the age of 40, 50? I think there should be a limit. I don’t think kids like older parents. The younger the child, the easier it is to learn how to ride a bike, the easier it is to run after it and the healthier they are. Older people are less able to deal with children. In my eyes, it’s perfectly right if younger people have children. By no means do I support this after the age of 50, but that’s just my personal opinion.
Is there any restriction on material storage?
Yes. We store genetic material, but only until the age of 40.
Are all steam donation procedures anonymous?
INFOCOTIC
- we talk about infertility when a couple does not get pregnant after a year of unprotected sex. If a woman is over the age of 35, it is recommended to seek help after 6 months of unsuccessful attempts
- after the age of 35, the chances of successful IVF are reduced, and after the age of 40 they are greatly reduced. Recent research has shown that age also affects pregnancy in men. Later, those women who have older partners get pregnant.
- Less than 30 percent of women become pregnant in the first month of unprotected sex. A woman under the age of 35 needs half a year to conceive a child.
- Knowing your own body is very important. Record your menstrual cycle accurately and try to determine the days of ovulation. This will help you plan your pregnancy, and later this information will help your gynecologist discover the cause of your infertility. Of course, it is important to live with less stress, keep a healthy and balanced diet and avoid alcohol, cigarettes and coffee, etc.
