Customer question:
What are the causes of leg swelling? Which medicine can help me?
Pharmacist's response:
The swelling of the ankles, feet, and legs is often the result of fluid accumulation in these areas, called edema. Swelling of the ankles, feet, or legs often goes away. See your GP if it doesn't get better in a few days.
Edema is usually caused by the following:
- standing or sitting in the same position for too long
- overeating salty food
- excess body weight
- pregnancy
- taking certain medicines - such as certain blood pressure medicines, birth control pills, hormone therapy, antidepressants, or steroids
Edema can also cause:
- an injury – for example, a strain or sprain
- insect bite or sting
- kidney, liver, or heart problems
- blood clot
- infection
Detralex is a medicine intended to treat symptoms of chronic vein disease, lymphedema, and acute hemorrhoidal disease in adults.
