Customer question:
Why do I feel a burning pain in my legs?
Pharmacist's response:
Burning sensations in the legs usually have a fairly obvious explanation, such as an injury to the leg or during or after intense exercise. However, it can also result from injury or exposure to extreme heat, cold, or toxic substances. The burning sensation in the legs can often be accompanied by paresthesia (tingling) and numbness, which is often very uncomfortable.
Some reasons for a burning sensation in the legs are not obvious and require a doctor's diagnosis.
Conditions resulting in a burning pain in the legs
Meralgia paresthetica
Meralgia paresthetica occurs when the nerve that provides sensation to the skin on the thigh is compressed—also called Bernhardt-Roth syndrome. The condition often presents as a burning pain on the surface of the outer thigh. The outer thigh may also tingle or become numb.
We help ourselves by simply releasing the place of compression.
Venous reflux
Venous reflux occurs when the veins in the legs do not adequately supply blood to the heart - also called venous insufficiency. If a leg vein fails, blood can pool excessively in the veins and consequently leak into the leg tissue. This leads to a fever or burning sensation, often accompanied by skin discoloration and itching.
Chronic venous disease is a disease in the leg where the blood drains too slowly from the lower limbs, so the fluid passes through the wall of the capillaries (smallest vessels) and collects in the tissue. The venous disease manifests as painful or tired legs, feeling of heavy legs, itching, night cramps in the legs, the appearance of varicose veins (varicose veins) on the legs, swelling of the legs, etc.
The drug Detralex is used in adults and is intended to treat symptoms of chronic vein disease.
Peripheral neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy is the cessation of the functioning of the nerves that transmit signals from the body to the spinal cord and brain. It is often associated with diabetes, alcohol use disorder, or Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Multiple sclerosis
Symptoms of MS include sensory disturbances that can cause burning pain, numbness, and tingling in the legs. These symptoms are often the result of faulty nerve signals from MS lesions in the spinal cord and brain.
