Customer question:
What causes burning urination in men? Anonymous customer's question
Pharmacist's answer:
Many things can cause burning urination in men. Some common causes include:
- urinary tract infections (infection of the urinary tract, including the bladder and urethra)
- some sexually transmitted diseases
- prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)
- kidney problems (such as infection or kidney stones)
- reaction to soaps, perfumes, and other personal care products
A urinary tract infection is often caused by an overgrowth of bacteria along the urinary tract. While women are 50% more likely to experience a UTI than men, men can still experience the condition. The most common symptoms of a urinary tract infection include a solid and frequent need to urinate and a burning or painful sensation when urinating. Fortunately, this infection can usually be cured within 2 to 3 days with proper treatment.
A prostate infection is also called acute prostatitis and has symptoms similar to a urinary tract infection. About 50% of men will experience a prostate infection in their lifetime, usually caused by the same type of bacteria that causes urinary tract infections or sexually transmitted infections. Treatment with antibiotics usually provides relief and cure.
STDs usually also affect the urinary tract; the most common symptoms are pain or burning when urinating.
The most common sexually transmitted diseases that cause a similar burning sensation are gonorrhea, genital herpes, and chlamydia. Treatment and results vary depending on the specific STD causing the infection.
