Customer question:
Can statins cause side effects? Question from an anonymous customer
Like all medicines, statins can cause side effects. Side effects may vary between different statins, but common side effects may include the following:
- headache
- dizziness
- feeling bad
- feeling unusually tired or physically weak
- digestive system problems such as constipation, diarrhea, and flatulence
- muscle pains
- sleeping problems
- low platelet count
One of the most common side effects is muscle pain. You can feel this pain as pain, fatigue, or muscle weakness. The pain can be mild discomfort, or it can be severe enough to make daily activities difficult.
When investigating the placebo effect of statins, it was found that it is often a sharper perceived muscle pain in connection with the effect of statins. However, the actual effect may not be there or is often less intense than usual.
The risk of developing muscle pain due to taking statins is about 5% lower than taking placebo pills.
