Customer question:
What headaches are there? Question from an anonymous customer
Pharmacist's answer:
Headaches can be primary or secondary, depending on the cause of the headache.
Primary headaches occur independently and are often not caused by other health problems. These include:
- Tension headaches are the most common and feel like a squeezing sensation around the head. They are usually related to stress, muscle tension, or poor posture.
- Migraine headache – a severe, throbbing pain often associated with other symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and can last from a few hours to several days, usually affecting one side of the head.
- Tangled headache – rare but extremely painful. It occurs in cycles, often at night, and is usually one-sided. Watery eyes and a stuffy nose may accompany the intense pain.
Other medical problems, such as infections, injuries, high blood pressure, or tumors, cause secondary headaches. This group includes:
- Sinus headache – caused by inflammation of the sinuses and causes a feeling of pressure in the jaw, forehead, and/or cheeks.
- Headache due to excessive caffeine consumption or caffeine withdrawal.
- Headache due to high blood pressure – can occur when blood pressure reaches very high levels.
If the headache occurs suddenly, is exceptionally severe, and is accompanied by other more serious symptoms (such as dizziness, difficulty speaking, nausea, or blurred vision it is recommended that you seek medical attention immediately.
