Customer question:
How does gingivitis manifest itself, and how can I help myself? Question from an anonymous customer
Pharmacist's answer:
Healthy gums are pink and firm.
If you have red and swollen gums, this can be a sign that you have problems with inflammation (gingivitis). Inflamed gums can have many causes, including plaque, mouth ulcers, and abrasions.
Symptoms of inflammation of the gums can also be the following:
- teeth chatter
- sensitive teeth
- pain when chewing
- fertilization between the teeth and gums
- partial dentures that no longer fit
- gums that have moved away from your teeth
- gums that are red, tender, or swollen
- gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- bad breath that doesn't go away when you brush your teeth
- a change in how your teeth fit together when you bite down (malocclusion)
The best way to restore the health of your gums is to ask your dentist how to improve your daily oral hygiene. This can be as simple as brushing twice daily for two minutes with fluoride or a daily specialist gum health toothpaste.
Other treatments include:
- deep teeth cleaning
- antibiotic drugs
- operation
