Customer question:
What are the signs of an ear infection? Do I have to see a doctor, or can I help myself at home or with over-the-counter medicines? Anonymous customer's question
Answer:
Common signs and symptoms of ear infections in adults include:
- pain in the ear
- fluid draining from the ear
- hearing problems
If you may have an otitis externa, it is imperative to see a doctor.
The GP will ask you about your symptoms and whether you regularly use ear aids such as hearing aids or ear plugs. They may also examine the inside of your ear using an otoscope.
Otitis externa sometimes improves without treatment, but it can take several weeks. Your doctor usually prescribes antibiotic ear drops, improving symptoms within a few days. Your doctor can also refer you to a specialist for further treatment and advice if your symptoms are severe or do not respond to the prescribed treatment.
To relieve pain and discomfort at home, you can help yourself as follows:
- take pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
- place a warm cloth (warm compresses) on the ear several times a day
- remove any discharge from the ears with cotton wool
