Customer question:
How to treat abdominal aortic aneurysm? Anonymous customer's question
Pharmacist's answer:
The treatment of an abdominal aortic aneurysm depends on its size, growth rate, general health, and other risk factors.
There are three main methods of treatment:
- Monitoring: Small aneurysms smaller than 5.5 centimeters and showing no signs of growth can only be monitored. This usually includes regular doctor visits and ultrasounds to monitor the growth of the aneurysm.
- Endovascular repair: this method uses particular stent grafts inserted through a blood vessel and then expanded inside the aorta to prevent further aneurysm expansion. This is a less invasive procedure than open surgery but is not suitable for every patient, depending on the size and location of the aneurysm.
- Open surgery: in this method, a surgical procedure is performed during which the aneurysm is cut and removed, and then, if necessary, a prosthesis (artificial tube) is inserted to replace the affected part of the aorta. Open surgery is usually necessary for more giant aneurysms or if there is a risk of aneurysm rupture. Check out more about aneurysms.
