Customer question:
My throat only hurts on one side. What could this mean, and how can I help? Question from an anonymous customer
Pharmacist's answer:
A sore throat is a common reason to visit the doctor, but it can also often be a symptom of an allergy, cold, or flu. Although a sore throat can be painful, it is usually not a severe medical condition. But if the throat hurts only on one side, it can indicate another disease or medical condition.
Swollen lymph nodes
Lymph nodes act as filters to help identify and trap microbes such as viruses and bacteria. When they do, the lymph nodes can become swollen and painful. Many diseases and infections can cause swollen lymph nodes. Sometimes only one node in a specific area is painful, which can cause throat inflammation only on one side.
Postnasal drip
Many common viral illnesses can cause sore throats. When the nose is blocked, mucus and fluid drain down the back of the throat - this is known as a postnasal drip. Constant mucus discharge can irritate the throat, causing a sore or scratchy sensation. In addition, a specific part of the throat may become more irritated due to the drainage, causing it to feel as if only one side is inflamed.
Angina
Angina describes inflammation of one or more tonsils. The tonsils are located at the back of the throat, and viruses or bacteria usually cause infection and inflammation. An infection of just one tonsil can cause pain on one side. Angina is also accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing. Bacterial angina usually resolves with antibiotic treatment.
Peritonsillar abscess
A peritonsillar abscess requires immediate medical attention. An abscess is a closed, pus-filled bump within the tissue, usually resulting from a bacterial infection.
A peritonsillar abscess forms in the tissues near the tonsils, usually when angina becomes severe or goes untreated. A peritonsillar abscess can cause severe pain on one side of the throat. It can also cause fever, swollen lymph nodes, and difficulty swallowing.
