There are a few different types of anemia, including:
- Iron deficiency anemia, which is also the most common form of anemia. This happens when you don't consume or absorb enough iron in your diet or lose much blood.
- Pernicious anemia and anemia due to B12 deficiency - or the result of a lack of vitamin B12, which is necessary to form healthy red blood cells. It can occur if you don't eat enough foods that contain vitamin B12 or if you have a medical problem that prevents the absorption of vitamin B12 from food. Pernicious anemia is also known as "megaloblastic anemia" because it causes the red blood cells produced to be larger than usual.
- Anaplastic anemia usually occurs when the bone marrow stops working and produces fewer red blood cells than your body needs.
- Hemolytic anemia is when red blood cells die or break down too early in their life cycle, resulting in a shortage of them in the body.
