Customer question:
What is ovarian endometriosis? Anonymous customer's question
Pharmacist's answer:
Ovarian endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to endometrial tissue (tissue inside the uterus) develops outside the uterus, on the surface of, or inside the ovaries. This tissue can spread to form cysts called endometrioid cysts or endometriomas in the ovaries.
Ovarian endometriosis is a subtype of endometriosis that can occur alone or in combination with other forms of endometriosis, such as endometriosis on the uterine ligaments or the surface of the peritoneum (abdominal lining). This form can cause a variety of symptoms, including chronic lower abdominal pain, pain during intercourse, difficulty conceiving, and menstrual irregularities.
Endometrioid cysts, characteristic of ovarian endometriosis, are filled with blood and endometrial-like tissue and can expand further and irritate the surrounding tissue, often causing pain and discomfort. In addition, these cysts can cause ovulation problems and obstruction of the fallopian tubes, which can lead to infertility.
