Customer question:
Can I take too much vitamin D? What happens if we have too much of it in our body? Anonymous customer.
Pharmacist's answer:
Hypervitaminosis D, or vitamin D poisoning, is a rare but potentially severe condition that occurs when you have excessive amounts of vitamin D.
Hypervitaminosis of vitamin D is usually caused by large doses of the vitamin above when taking too many nutritional supplements; the problem is not diet or exposure to the sun. This is mainly because the human body regulates the amount of vitamin D produced when exposed to the sun.
Signs of vitamin D hypervitaminosis
- loss of appetite
- closure
- dehydration
- disorientation
- dizziness
- fatigue
- frequent urination
- high blood pressure
- irritability
- muscle weakness
- nausea
- thirst
- tinnitus
- vomiting
If you notice these symptoms, consult your doctor. Be sure to also tell your doctor what nutritional supplements and medications you are taking, including their dosages. If your doctor suspects that your symptoms may be related to an overdose of vitamin D, he may recommend laboratory tests to check your serum vitamin D levels.
