Customer question:
How do we recognize anogenital warts? Anonymous customer's question
Pharmacist's answer:
Anogenital warts are small, fleshy growths that can be flat or raised. They often have a rough or cauliflower-like surface but are sometimes smooth. Their color may differ from leather. They can be pink, reddish, greyish, or skin-colored. They can also be slightly brownish in some people. Warts can be very small (a few millimeters) or more significant. They can appear singly or in groups, sometimes forming larger lesions similar to cauliflower clusters. They can grow slowly and spread in the genital and anal areas and sometimes in the mouth and throat after oral sex with an infected person. In men, they most often appear on the penis, scrotum, around the anus, in the urethra, or on the inner thighs.
In women, they can appear on the vulva, walls of the vagina, on the cervix, or around the anus. Anal warts usually appear around the anus in both sexes and can be especially common in people who have anal sex. Anogenital warts are usually painless but may cause discomfort, itching, or burning. In rare cases, warts can cause bleeding, especially during intercourse. Warts can cause psychological stress due to their appearance, which can affect a person's self-confidence and sex life.
